Treatment in Chengdu for patients from Central Asia & Russia
What is different for you, specifically — visas, flights, currency, insurance and the practical questions that come up before booking.
An established route, a different destination
- There is nothing to explain about the concept: treatment in China is a known option across the region, and referral patterns have existed for years.
- What is new is the destination. Urumqi and Beijing absorbed most of this flow; Chengdu offers West China Hospital, a national referral centre whose specialist depth is different from what most patients in the region have experienced.
Cost
- The comparison that matters is against Russian private clinics and against treatment in Kazakhstan or Uzbekistan. For complex surgery the Chinese figure is usually lower, and the specialist depth is higher.
Language: plan for Russian, not English
- This is the practical difference between this market and every other on this site. English is not a useful fallback for most patients from this region.
- Documents are the same problem: discharge summaries and medical reports usually need to be in Russian to be usable by a doctor or insurer at home. Tell us at the start so we can plan the translation properly rather than after discharge.
Visa
- The rule does not change by country: medical treatment is not a permitted purpose of ordinary visa-free entry. A treatment-led trip needs an M visa with a hospital invitation letter, which we prepare.
- Several countries in the region do have visa-free arrangements with China, which makes a short diagnostic trip or a consultation straightforward. Longer treatment is a different matter — check with us before booking.
Flights
- Routing often means a connection through Urumqi, Beijing or Moscow. Budget a full day each way and do not plan a consultation for your arrival day.
Insurance and payment
- You pay the hospital directly; we never handle treatment funds. Large admissions are settled by bank transfer to the hospital's corporate account.
- Cross-border transfers from the region can be slow and are sometimes restricted. Set the route up before you travel rather than on admission day.
Questions from Central Asia & Russia
Why Chengdu rather than Urumqi or Beijing?
Urumqi and Beijing have absorbed most of this region's patients for years, and both remain valid choices. Chengdu's argument is West China Hospital — a national referral centre with a specialist depth and a single-campus scale that most patients in the region have not had access to before. It is also cheaper to live in for a long admission than Beijing, and much easier to walk around during recovery. It is also cheaper to live in for a long admission than Beijing, which matters when the stay runs to several weeks rather than a few days.
Can we manage in English, or do you need Russian?
Plan for Russian. This is the practical difference between this market and every other on this site: English is not a useful fallback for most patients from Central Asia or Russia, and documents that need to be read by a doctor or insurer at home usually have to be in Russian. Tell us at the start and we will confirm what interpretation and translation we can arrange for your case rather than after discharge. If a discharge summary has to be read by a doctor or an insurer at home, it usually has to be in Russian, and that translation has to be planned from the first appointment rather than produced after discharge.
Can I come visa-free, and does that matter for treatment?
Several countries in the region do have visa-free arrangements with China, which makes a short diagnostic trip or a consultation straightforward — we verify the position for your specific passport. But the rule does not change: medical treatment is not a permitted purpose of ordinary visa-free entry, so a treatment-led trip needs an M visa with the hospital's invitation letter. Check with us before booking anything longer than a consultation. For anything longer than a consultation, check with us before booking: overstaying a visa-free entry or being refused at the border is a far worse outcome than filing the paperwork in advance.
How do we transfer money from the region?
You pay the hospital directly, and we never handle treatment funds. Large admissions are settled by bank transfer to the hospital's corporate account. Cross-border transfers from Central Asia and Russia can be slow and are sometimes restricted, so set the route up well before you travel rather than on admission day. Set the transfer route up well before you travel rather than on admission day, and keep the bank receipt for every transfer, because the hospital will ask for it when reconciling your account.
