Patients from 🇦🇪
Treatment in Chengdu for patients from Gulf & Middle East
What is different for you, specifically — visas, flights, currency, insurance and the practical questions that come up before booking.
What the Gulf sends abroad
- The main flows are complex oncology, cardiac surgery, transplant, paediatric subspecialties and fertility, most of it to Germany, the UK, the US, Thailand and India.
- China's argument is not price here — it is capacity and waiting time. A national referral hospital in Chengdu can often see a case within days to two weeks where a European centre quotes months.
Cost, and why it matters less
- 待填:本币参考价格换算 —— 需按当日汇率把各术式价格换算为 AED / SAR,并注明汇率日期
- For self-paying Gulf patients the relevant comparison is against Germany or the UK private sector, where a complex admission can run five to ten times the Chinese figure. Against Thailand the gap is much smaller, so if Thailand is your benchmark, choose on department strength rather than price.
Visa
- Gulf nationals are largely on China's visa-free or mutual visa-exemption lists — ordinary entry up to 30 days for business, tourism, family visits, exchange and transit.
- Medical treatment is not a permitted purpose. A treatment-led trip needs an M visa with a hospital invitation letter. Government-sponsored patients travelling on official referral should follow whatever route their sponsoring body specifies — tell us which it is and we will work to it.
Flights
- 待填:成都—海湾直飞航线与班次 —— 需核实当前航司与时刻,含迪拜、多哈、阿布扎比、利雅得
- Several Gulf carriers connect to Chengdu; otherwise the usual routing is via Dubai, Doha or Abu Dhabi. Allow a full day each way.
Religious and cultural requirements
- These decide whether a trip is viable, and most providers do not mention them. Ask us and we will confirm for the specific hospital you are attending:
- Halal food — available in Chengdu, and most hospitals can arrange it with notice.
- Prayer facilities and prayer times respected around treatment schedules.
- Female physicians where requested, for examination and for procedures. This needs to be requested in advance; not every department can guarantee it, and we will tell you which can.
- Ramadan — fasting interacts with anaesthesia, diabetes management and medication timing. If your admission falls in Ramadan, raise it with the treating team early; do not assume it can be accommodated.
Insurance, payment and sponsorship
- 待填:海湾保险与政府转诊渠道 —— 当地保险公司、政府医疗转诊机构是否覆盖中国治疗,需逐一确认
- You pay the hospital directly; we never handle treatment funds. For large admissions use bank transfer to the hospital's corporate account.
- If a government body or insurer is sponsoring the treatment, get the guarantee of payment in writing before admission. Hospitals here, like hospitals anywhere, will ask for it.
Documents and reporting
- Gulf patients often need a formal medical report in English for an employer, an insurer or a sponsoring ministry. Tell us at the start what format is required — reports written after discharge are harder to reshape than reports written to a template.
- Bring your imaging as DICOM, not as reports or photographs.
Questions from Gulf & Middle East
We usually go to Germany or the UK. Why China?
Not for price, although the price gap is large. The reason is time: a national referral hospital in Chengdu can often assess a case within days to two weeks, where a European centre quotes months for the same specialty. If you are already under care in Germany or the UK and the waiting is manageable, staying is reasonable. If the wait is the problem, China is worth a serious look. One qualification: if you are already under the care of a specialist you trust and the wait is tolerable, staying is usually the better decision, because continuity of care has real value that a faster appointment does not replace.
Can you arrange a female physician, halal food and prayer?
We can confirm it for the specific hospital you attend, and we will tell you honestly when a department cannot guarantee something rather than promising it. Halal food is available in Chengdu and most hospitals can arrange it with notice; prayer facilities exist but should be confirmed per site; a female physician for examination or a procedure must be requested in advance and cannot be guaranteed everywhere. If your admission falls in Ramadan, raise it early — fasting interacts with anaesthesia, diabetes management and medication timing.
What about a government or insurer guarantee of payment?
If a ministry, government body or insurer is sponsoring the treatment, obtain the written guarantee of payment before admission. Chinese hospitals, like hospitals everywhere, will ask for it, and arriving without it means the bill falls to you personally in the interim. You pay the hospital directly in any case — we never handle treatment funds. Without that document the hospital will normally ask you to settle the bill yourself and seek reimbursement afterwards, which shifts the cash-flow risk onto you for the whole admission.
Will you provide a formal medical report in English?
Yes, and tell us at the start what format you need. Gulf patients frequently require a formal report for an employer, an insurer or a sponsoring ministry, and a report written to a template is far easier to produce than one reshaped after discharge. Bring imaging as DICOM, not as reports or photographs — the surgeon needs the raw series. Bring imaging as DICOM files rather than reports or photographs, and bring older scans as well as the most recent, because the change between them is often what decides the plan.
