❓ Questions to ask any facilitator
Including the ones we would rather you did not have to ask. Ask them of every coordinator you speak to, and ask them of us.
About money
- Is your fee paid by me, or by the hospital? If the hospital pays you, say so plainly — I need to know whose interest you are representing.
- What exactly is your fee, and at what point does it become payable?
- If I decide not to travel, what do I owe you?
- Does the hospital quote in writing, on its own letterhead, before I pay anything?
- Who holds my money between payment and treatment — a hospital account, or yours?
About the hospital and the doctor
- Which hospital, and is it Grade 3A? What is its national ranking in this specialty, and where is that published?
- Which named doctor would treat me, and how many of these procedures do they do a year?
- Have you personally walked this hospital's international patient pathway, or are you listing it from public information?
- What happens if the surgeon I was shown is not the surgeon who operates?
- Has this hospital treated patients from my country before, and can I speak to one?
About the medicine
- What is the evidence that this treatment is appropriate for my specific diagnosis?
- What are the alternatives, including doing nothing or waiting?
- What is the realistic complication rate for someone with my other conditions?
- If the treatment does not work, what is the plan B, and what does it cost?
- Who is responsible for my care once I fly home?
About complications
- What happens if something goes wrong? Which hospital handles it, and who pays?
- Is there a written plan for follow-up after I return home, in a language my own doctor reads?
- What is your track record — how many patients have you sent, and how many had complications?
- If I need a revision or a second operation, what does it cost and who covers it?
About your data
- Where will my medical records be stored, and who can see them?
- Do you share my records with anyone other than the treating hospital?
- Will you delete my records if I ask you to?
- Are you registered as a business, and in which jurisdiction? What is your company registration number?
Three answers that should end the conversation
We have written this page knowing it will be used on us too. If you get any of these three answers from anyone, including us, stop:
- “Success rates are above 95%” — for anything serious, without qualification by age, stage or case mix.
- “Pay a deposit to my account and I will book it” — money for hospital treatment belongs in a hospital account.
- “You do not need a second opinion, this is definitely the right treatment” — said before anyone has read your records.
Send us these questions with your records. We will answer them in writing, including the ones whose honest answer is that we do not know yet.
