Each specialty page states what is genuinely available, the published reference cost range, how long you would need to stay, and exactly what we need from you to get a real answer. We deliberately do not present a single headline saving figure, because the honest range depends entirely on which procedure, which hospital and which benchmark you compare against.
Which specialties are worth travelling for
This is our honest read, not a sales table. “Worth travelling” means the clinical difference or the cost gap is large enough to justify a long flight and weeks away from home.
| Specialty | Typical trip length | Why patients travel | Worth travelling? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cancer care & second opinions | 1–2 weeks (review); 3–6 weeks (surgery) | Multidisciplinary review in one session rather than sequentially; wider availability of some systemic therapies | Often — especially for a second opinion you can act on |
| Dental implants | 5–7 days, then 3–5 days after 3–6 months | Large published price gap and a mature implant sector | Usually — but budget honestly, and the saving is smaller than headline figures suggest |
| Health check-ups | 3–4 days | Comprehensive screening at a fraction of Western private prices, with reports in 24–48 hours | Yes, if you want breadth of screening; less so for a single targeted test |
| Orthopaedics & joint replacement | 3–6 weeks | Waiting lists at home measured in months; large cost difference on major surgery | Often — particularly where the wait is the main problem |
| Cardiac surgery | 2–4 weeks | High surgical volume at national centres, and a large cost gap on bypass and valve work | Sometimes — depends heavily on case complexity and your own surgeon’s opinion |
| Fertility & IVF | 2–4 weeks per cycle | Lower cycle costs, but eligibility is restricted by Chinese regulation | Only if you are eligible — we check this before you plan anything |
| Traditional Chinese medicine | 2–4 weeks | Integrated into hospital care rather than offered as an alternative to it | As an adjunct, yes; as a replacement for conventional treatment, no |
